Today I met the sweetest 15 year old named Victoria. She and her mother stopped in for a makeup application because she was going on her first date. It was a 30 minute service and I was 27 minutes from clocking out for the day but did it anyway.
Sidenote: yesterday made one year since the passing of TC, and though I didn’t know him personally, I’m closely connected to some of his closest friends and family and I saw how devastating his death was because of how much of an impact his life was. Seeing it firsthand taught me so much. One being, and if you follow me on Twitter you saw me tweet this; “I’ve learned to not be so transactional in relationships but recognize that even in everyday life, no matter where I'm at, people are valuable.”
This was those moments.
I took my time and treated Victoria as if this was a scene she’d never forget and I had the honor of co-starring. As I began asking her questions and really getting to know her, I had a flashback of when I was her age and how Ryan at Macy’s Rivertown in Grand Rapids made me feel. He complimented me, asked me questions that had nothing to do with makeup but recognized that I was a human. That one encounter boosted my confidence more than the spiked brow pencil and zoom lash I purchased. Almost 10 years later, I’ll never forget him or how he made me feel like a million bucks.
In the end, she and her mother couldn’t stop thanking me and they made sure we took selfies. I was amazed at how much more confident she was upon leaving. And I believe that confidence had less to do with her eye makeup and pouty lip and more to do with the fact that I showed care and concern for her despite my personal agenda. Victoria, a shy, 15 year old girl was going on her first date with a boy she’s been crushing on since the beginning of freshman year and I had the opportunity to make this day memorable for her!
So Victoria, if you read this, know that you’re such a sweetheart and I hope I left an imprint, because you surely left one on me! And I LOVE your freckles. Have fun with on your date! Xoxo
P.S. On my way home from work, I called 3 different MAC locations looking for Ryan and finally got to him! So Ryan if you’re reading this, I meant every word I said! THANK YOU!
